Region 6 - Southeastern Pennsylvania Attractions

In one breath you’ll live the days of no electricity, plumbing, or gas-powered vehicles, and the next you’ll find yourself amidst the city of brotherly love and the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan area.

Lancaster County, home to the oldest Amish settlement is a must see while visiting this area. It’s a place where you step back in time and can interact with families who make their living farming without modern-day tools. Amish attractions include buggy rides through Amish working farms, and dairy farms where you’ll see the milking of cows by hand and where they “refrigerate” milk without electricity. Visit one of the several farmers markets in the area and stock up on home-grown fruits, vegetables, scrumptious Amish baked goods, and hand-sewn quilts.

“Buggy” on out of the farm fields and you’ll find modern-day entertainment at several venues including Sight & Sound, the largest Christian live theatre on the East Coast, American Music Theatre, where the entertainment never stops with top-rated performers; or the Dutch Apple Theatre, where the show comes with a dinner buffet.

Keep traveling back in time and you’ll arrive at three neighborhoods squeezed into one square mile from Front to 7th streets and Spruce to Race streets, which when put together make up Historic Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, two of America’s most prized historic treasures tell tales of our country’s fight for freedom. Philadelphia is a Mecca of restaurants, shops, and museums. To find more about historic Philadelphia go to www.nps.gov/inde.

For an attraction of different colors, check out the The Crayola Factory located in Easton, where children and adults participate in dozens of hands-on activities. Watch how crayons and markers are made through live demonstrations.

What do hawks, vultures, ospreys, eagles and falcons have in common? They are birds of prey that “hang out” at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Over 12,000 raptors have been spotted and protected in these 2,600 acres of land plus an additional 13,000 acres of private and public land. You can spend time with the birds of prey on the mountain vistas with your binoculars and your curiosity. Hawk Mountain also provides a flyway to the Appalachian Trail. Pulpit Rock and The Pinnacle are two of the trail’s icons, and a few of our campgrounds have connecting trails to these vistas.

After a long day of activities head to one of the multitude of wineries and breweries in this region, including Pottsville’s Yuengling Brewery, America’s oldest.

American Music Theatre

American Music Theatre

The music never stops at “Lancaster’s Entertainment Showplace.” Born from a dream in September, 1996, this project required a city of construction professionals who worked around the clock, seven days a week. In less than seven months, there stood a 55,000 square foot, 1,600-seat theatre with a breathtaking lobby, state-of-the-art sound and lighting for the 56-foot stage and extra wide aisles with over-sized seats to ensure the most comfortable and intimate entertainment experience in the industry. The theatre soon emerged as one of Lancaster’s most popular destinations, welcoming millions of visitors from all over the country by staging critically acclaimed original productions and hosting some of the world’s most popular celebrity performers.

Mack Trucks Historical Museum

Mack Trucks Historical Museum

One of the original sightseeing buses built by Jack and Augustus Mack in the first decade of the century is in the Museum. The gas-operated, open-air bus carried up to 26 tourists at a time around the streets and sights of Chicago in the summer and New Orleans in the winter, courtesy of the Higgins Tour Company. In 1925, the bus was returned to Mack when it was bought from Higgins and put on display. You can see a 1911 Mack Jr. that shared the streets with horse-drawn wagons as it made its rounds delivering dry goods and produce. It’s the final truck design attributed to the Mack brothers before they sold their company to investors in 1911. Then there’s the 1918 AC model, one of 4,100 built for World War I. Although there’s no bulldog on the hood of this early Mack truck, it was the AC that earned the name while it was busy dodging bullets and trudging through the mud in France. The truck’s unique blunt-nosed design reminded British troops of their own bulldogs. So did its tenacious ability to get through anything with the supplies needed at the front. This museum will treat truck enthusiasts to all of these … and more.

Washington Crossing Historic Park

From this site, General George Washington and men of the Continental Army and militia crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776 and marched to Trenton, New Jersey. There they attacked and defeated Hessian troops quartered in and around the village. This surprise attack and victory set the stage for Washington’s subsequent victories at the Second Battle of Trenton and Princeton. The Crossing and the Trenton / Princeton campaign have become known as the Ten Crucial Days – a campaign that saved Washington’s army from defeat, allowing them to fight another day and achieve ultimate victory. Washington Crossing Historic Park preserves and interprets for citizens and visitors the site at which General George Washington planned and executed his daring crossing of the Delaware River on December 25, 1776, leading to victory in the Battle of Trenton and turning the tide of the Revolutionary War, as well as the social and economic history of this important location.

Wharton Esherick Museum

In the decade before he died in 1970 at the age of 83, Wharton Esherick of Paoli, Pennsylvania, was heralded by the national art and design community as the “Dean of American Craftsmen.” It was an accolade not previously bestowed upon an American artist and an indication of the unique nature of Esherick’s work and influence. Ironically, much of his career was spent in relative isolation; a lone artisan pursuing his own vision of high-art craftsmanship during a period when hand craftsmanship was generally held in low regard by American culture. Ultimately, Esherick’s work helped lead to the renaissance of the 1960s that re-established hand craftsmanship as the popular and highly-valued activity it is today.

Yuengling Brewery

Yuengling Brewery

Founded in 1829 by David G.Yuengling, Yuengling is recognized as America’s oldest brewery. The family of beers brewed includes porters, lagers and ales that have quenched the thirst of loyal customers for nearly two centuries. For over 175 years each recipe has called for both American six row and imported two row barley malt along with a combination of Cluster and Cascade hops. Coupled with longer aging times, each of these craft-brewed beers offers its own unique appearance, aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. This home town brewer has the distinction of being a regional brewery without sacrificing flavor to appeal to the masses. Unique tours of this National Historic Landmark are offered daily and on special weekends. There is a free tour and even a free sample at the end of the tour. Situated along historic Mahantongo street, the Yuengling brewery even has a gift shop and museum.
